mess unmanaged gruzuk The Mist Kills AgainI love these stories where the damnest little thing causes a major meltdown. We’ve become soooo reliant on technology that the slightest bump from an unlikely source causes the biggest problems. How many times have you been sent to diagnosis a printer problem and don’t check that it’s plugged in first? Or that there is paper in the tray?

I personally had to diagnosis a remote IP camera configuration once and upon opening the weatherproof enclosure, found that the power cables were taped together and that heat had melted the casing on the DSL modems.

How many times have you ripped apart a switch or a router configuration only to find that the user moved their computer and forgot to plug the ethernet cable back in? I’d actually like to know so please register, login and make some comments. I know that the WTFers hit here so come on…I’ll be your best friend?

Anyway enough musings, these are the snips from the Daily WTF blog today…

The setup:

David came into work to find an alert email stating that network connectivity had been interrupted during the night and transfers between 01:30 and 04:30 were taking almost 2 hours to complete.

The punchline:

The tech on the other end, who actually seemed quite perky for 2am, stated that the problem was a known issue due an old line splice between the two ends of the leased line. The fog, had caused some moisture to build up, thereby interrupting the connection. By the time the sun was up, the moisture problem, and the connectivity issues would have evaporated.

p.s. The title is a reference to an old Stephen KingW novel, The MistW.
