…metaphorically speaking.

What a great title to a blog post! Even better quote.

Dylan Beattie’s Blog: A Rant about RAID, with a Bad Metaphor about Eggs, and No Happy Ending.

You know your whole eggs & baskets thing, right? SATA RAID is like carefully dividing your eggs into two really good baskets, then tying them together with six feet of wet spaghetti and hanging them off a ceiling fan.

A Rant about RAID, with a Bad Metaphor about Eggs, and No Happy Ending. It definitely seems that I’ve been reading more and more complaints lately about RAIDW and the problems that it causes. I have to say that I’ve had more than one RAID fail and it’s never been easy to get the system back to preboot status. Of course now that I’m thinking about it, it’s desktop RAID that is the problem. RAID+1 is the fucker, RAID+5 has saved my bacon many times.

Regardless, here is another post about the RAID problem and possible solution. It’s kind of a reply of sorts to the quoted post above.

Putting your eggs in one SATA basket

Dylan Beattie lamented over on his blog about RAID and it’s problems. I, too, had experienced problems in the past and discovered some of the same issues. I have two possibilities that seem the least offensive – use *Windows* RAID which theoretically is not as fast as hardware-based but is portable to another running Windows machine. No longer are you tied to a particular board manufacturer’s unique RAID solution. The second is to use virtual machines.
