John Furrier has posted an interesting video about exponential growth in today’s digital age. Now he’s taking it from the perspective of venture capitalW investing but I think it can stand alone about the growth of any venture that we choose today. In today’s always connected, always on society, a good idea has the potential to reach millions of people in an incredibly short amount of time.

The video started getting really good around 2:00 minutes in. In 1984, there were 1000 devices connected to the Internet. In 1992, there were 1,000,000 devices connected. Note that 1992 is before the 1994 “commercialization” of the Internet. In 2008, it’s 1,000,000,000 devices. In 16 years, the number of devices increased by a factor of 10. Exponential growth indeed.

You’ll see that it took the iPod 3 years to hit a market of 50,000,000 users and Facebook only 2 years.

It’s exciting that if you have a good idea and stick with it for even a relatively short amount of time, you could experience incredible success. Not to engage in navel gazing but this blog has been around for 3 days short of a month and has hit over 200 pageviews daily and a PageRank of 0 in that short time and this blog, as much as I would like to think differently, is nothing special.

Design a great app for the Apple App Store or design the next great Firefox plugin or whatever and you have a global audience that could buy your hot tub complete with smoking hot blondes.

Fact is, there are very few deals that change the landscape -- ones that have exponential growth.. This video makes you think about the future. It is unwritten and global.
